Three dogs were seized by police after savagely mauling their owner to death and injuring a witness who stepped in to try to stop the attack a California park.

Pedro Luis Ortega, 26, was viciously attacked by his dogs while walking in Mesa Viking Neighborhood Park in San Diego on Friday afternoon. 

Witnesses reported a terrifying scene, with multiple people attempting to stop the violent mauling. 

Officers from the San Diego Police Department responded to multiple emergency calls to find the three dogs still attacking the victim near Ericson Elementary School.

Officers were forced to use tasers to stop the assault, with the dogs initially continuing their attack before finally scattering.

One dog was quickly secured in a vehicle, while police hunted down the other two loose animals.

Ortega was rushed to Scripps Memorial Hospital but tragically died from his injuries.

A second person who attempted to rescue the man was also hospitalized with serious bite wounds and is still recovering.

Video footage revealed that the dogs had been walking peacefully with their owner just two hours before the deadly attack.

The dogs, described as XL bully breeds, were immediately placed in mandatory quarantine.

San Diego Humane Society spokesperson Nina Thompson confirmed a second owner of the dogs agreed to have them euthanized.

The dogs were set to be tested for rabies as part of standard protocol.

‘Upon arrival, our humane officers worked collaboratively to locate two of the dogs [that] were still loose, and impounded a third dog that had been contained in a car,’ Thompson told NBC7. 

‘As a result of the ongoing investigation, the decision was made to euthanize all three of the victim’s dogs,’ Thompson said.

‘This remains an active and ongoing investigation. We are committed to ensuring a thorough review of the incident. 

‘Our hearts and deepest sympathies go out to the victim’s loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.’
